Showstopping beaches and one-of-a-kind wildlife, the 17,000 islands of Indonesia glow with just as much personality as beauty. Here are our tips on everything you need to know.

Relax on idyllic beaches

Relax on idyllic beaches

There’s nowhere else in the world that can quite rival the beaches of Indonesia. From the world famous shores of Bali to the pink tinged sands of Komodo, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing your own personal beach paradise. Be sure not to miss the Gili islands, idyllic island retreats where you can really get away from it all in style.

Get active in paradise

If you’re more of an adrenaline junkie than a beach bum, you won’t be disappointed with Indonesia. Try your hand at volcano climbing in Lombok or dip your toes into a touch of surfing. Take to the depths of the ocean and snorkel or dive among the coral reefs – you’ll find 20% of the world’s reefs here! If you fancy getting cultural, why not try some classic Indonesia dancing or even horseback spear throwing?

Get back to nature

With rainforests stretching over around 57% of Indonesia’s islands, there’s no excuse not to explore the abundance of wildlife on offer here. Head straight to Komodo National Park and try to spot a giant Komodo dragon in its natural habitat. You won’t want to miss the friendly orang-utans at Bukit Lawang and the tiny tarsiers (the world’s smallest primates) in the Tankoko reserve in Northern Sulawesi.

Money

The currency of Indonesia is the rupiah, which due to inflation is no longer broken down into its sub units of sen.

Travelling around Indoneisa

By bus

Buses are cheap and plentiful across Indonesia, but they’re not exactly the quickest way to get around! For long distances city to city, a good company to look out for is Perama, with fares starting at around 25,000 rupiah.

By boat

With so many islands to discover, there’s no denying that ferry travel is a vital way to get around the islands of Indonesia. However, in recent years, flying has become much cheaper and quicker way to get around. If you’d prefer to stick to the water, try Pelni.

By plane

Sometimes hopping on a plane is the most simple way to get from A to B, and it’s certainly true in Indonesia where a flight from Bali and Jakarta will set you back as little as Rp500,000. However, flights in Indonesia are often overbooked and sometimes operate on a first come, first served basis – so it’s always worth getting to the airport early to guarantee yourself a seat!
